Pigeon weekend,in the winter gardens Jan 2012.

The Blackpool show is without a doubt one of the largest in the world and regularly attracts around 25,000 visitors. It is held the third weekend in January each year, and is one of Blackpool's busiest weekends, when hoteliers, resturants, taxi drivers and shop keepers welcome pigeons fanciers and their families with open arms, for it's a truly family event. Pigeon fanciers can buy anything from a £25,000 mahogany loft to a bags of corn at one of the 200 or so stands. Thousands of pigeons chnage hands at sales and autions where sums of £10 to £10,000 can be paid for a pedigree racing pigeon or its offsprings. Events are held for fanciers, and wives and partners go to the variety shops. There is a real brotherhood of fanciers and friend who'll meet up from varies parts of the country having not seen each other since the last show.

Of course there is a serious side to the show and what can be termed the 'Crufts of pigeon world'. Around 25000 pigeons are on display all tyring to win best in show with the winner going on to the supreme champion class. To enter this class then your pigeon must ahve won at a pigeon show in the previous 12 months. Theres alot of kudos winning at Blackpool and indeed the same for any fancier who is invited to judge. It is a great honour for them.

When all the above hard work is done, the money is counted and all the profit goes to various charities. We support the 'british fancier' pigeon lung research team with a sizable grant each year that enables them to carry on research into respiratory disease. We are also now ASBAH'S single largest donors with over £440,000!.
